Abu Dhabi Starts 100-Day Countdown to Ocean Race
UK travellers booking cheap flights to Abu Dhabi this winter will have an opportunity to enjoy the third stopover leg of the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race.
The round-the-world sailing competition begins at the end of next month in a popular location for Spain holidays – the south eastern port of Alicante – and contestants will be heading to Cape Town before making their way to Abu Dhabi between 30 December and 14 January next year.
The Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) begun the 100-day countdown to its hosting of the Volvo Ocean Race today and revealed plans for two weeks of activities at the emirate's opulent Destination Village complex, which has recently enjoyed a massive infrastructure upgrade in readiness for the arrival of the yachting teams – including the installation of seven permanent yacht pontoons in order to berth the cutting edge vessels operated by the contestants.
Visitors enjoying Abu Dhabi holidays during this period will also be able to participate in a two-week programme of entertainment organised by the ADTA, with concerts, sailing courses, special games and maritime exhibitions all promised by the tourism authority.
After its two-week stopover in Abu Dhabi, the Volvo Ocean Race will be heading further east, to the Chinese port of Sanya, before moving on to the New Zealand capital Auckland, across the Pacific Ocean to the Brazilian city of Itajai and northward to Miami in the US, before returning across the expanse of the Atlantic to stopover in the Portuguese capital Lisbon, Lorient in France and Galway in the Republic of Ireland.
Cheap flights to Abu Dhabi are available from airports across the UK.
