Avis Predict Rise in Experience Holidays
Car hire giant Avis Europe has predicted that this year will see the rise of the “experience holiday.”
The company said that last year may have seen the “staycation” rise in popularity, but with improved economic conditions this year, people are increasingly looking for holidays that offer a mixture of unusual experiences.
Research by the car hire firm revealed that 13 per cent of UK holidaymakers want their break to have a cultural or educational slant, while nearly 20 per cent are looking for a sporting or adventure holiday in 2010.
A significant 37 per cent of British tourists will be booking holidays with a variety of different activities in mind. The rise of independent holiday planning also continues apace, according to the research.
More people than ever want to take control over their itinerary and are opting for the flexibility of online booking, where you can find the cheapest hotels, cheap car hire deals and a wide range of cheap flights to Europe and beyond. Avis said that 84 per cent of respondents had opted for independent travel arrangements.
Avis UK head of marketing Nick Mountfield commented: “In 2009 we saw many consumers opting to holiday in their own country, but now we are seeing signs of economic stabilisation, leisure travellers are once again looking to explore foreign shores,” according to Breaking Travel News.
“Spring is the perfect time for the first getaway of the year and we are already seeing limited availability of car hires as consumers look to firm up their travel plans. While traditional beach and city breaks are still proving popular, a significant number of travellers are looking to make more of their time away by either taking in more venues at their chosen destination or undertaking more fulfilling activities during their break,” he continued.
