BA Considers More Flights to the USA

BA Considers More Flights to the USA Flag carrier British Airways is considering expanding the number of cheap flights to the USA that it offers thanks to the success of its transatlantic services from London City Airport.

At the time of writing, BA is soon to face another ballot for strike action by cabin crew. However, this has not dampened the airline’s expansion plans, according to the airline’s chief executive Willie Walsh.

Addressing delegates at last week’s Business Travel Market, Mr Walsh revealed that the carrier was considering more flights to the USA, following a high level of bookings for its current business flights to New York from London City. According to a report on TTG Live, he said that any extra flights to the USA would most likely target cities on the eastern seaboard.

Mr Walsh said: “We could look at Boston, Washington and Chicago. We have two aircraft at London City and if it continues the way it has, we will definitely look at additional services. It could be more frequencies or additional destinations.”

BA has already introduced an extra route recently, with last week’s announcement that it plans to begin offering flights to Cancun in Mexico from London Gatwick.

Although the airline intends to retain its headquarters at London Heathrow Airport, services from Gatwick and London City have been largely unaffected by the strike action dogging BA, and so it makes sense that further services would be based around these two transport hubs.

With regard to the industrial dispute with cabin crew, the staff union Unite told BA today that it has until 29 July to settle it or face another strike ballot for strike action over the summer. The row is now focused on union attempts to restore travel perks stripped from strikers in March this year.
