BAA Hails Record Numbers For USA Flights

BAA Hails Record Numbers For USA Flights Airport operator BAA said this week that cheap flights to the USA and Canada are more popular than ever among travellers at London Heathrow.

BAA published figures for the past few months showing a huge boost in the number of UK citizens taking business trips to North America or cheap flights to their USA holidays, with 71,000 more passengers taking advantage of the many American services from the hub last month alone than during the same period in 2010.

Cheap flights to Detroit and Montreal were among the most popular of all, with year-on-year passenger increases of 42 per cent and 50 per cent respectively. BAA said that the impact on travel to the USA caused by Hurricane Irene at the end of August, these impressive passenger figures were
"particularly notable", adding that it estimated that were it not for the hurricane there would have been an additional 40,000 passengers to the USA that month.

London Heathrow Airport broke a couple of its own records last month, with BAA confirming that it enjoyed the busiest August so far – during the month, around 6.6 million passengers took cheap flights to or from the hub. It also achieved record levels of filled seats on its departing flights, with an average passenger volume of 82.2 per cent.

Across the rest of the UK, BAA revealed that last month its airports handled some 10.7 million passengers, representing a 0.2 per cent rise compared to the previous August.
BAA chief executive officer Colin Matthews commented: "Together with our airline customers, we served a record number of passengers this summer."

"Our passengers tell us we are delivering a better service for them and we are investing £1 billion a year in new passenger facilities."
