Car Hire Warning for Irish Government
A report by a coalition of Irish tourism bodies has warned the Irish government that the car rental sector could lose over a quarter of a billion euros in 2010 due to a severe shortage of vehicles available for hire.
The report, Car Rental Fleet Shortages Tourism in 2010, said that the size of the national car hire fleet has shrunk from some 30,000 vehicles in 2006 to just 12,500 in 2010.
It chimes with recent reports urging people to book their car hire as early as possible, after revelations of fleet shortages in Spain, France and Italy. Anyone planning a holiday in Ireland would be advised to do the same.
However, one company seems to be looking to revolutionise car hire operations - French car giant Peugeot is hoping to become an innovative market leader with its new “pay as you go” rental scheme – Peugeot Mu – which is due to begin operating in the UK.
The service was originally tested in France and is now scheduled to begin in Britain by the end of the year. Under the scheme, a subscriber received a prepaid car hire account, which can be topped up online via the Peugeot Mu website.
Just-Auto magazine reported that when using the account, a driver will be able to choose car hire options ranging from a pushbike or scooter, to an array of Peugeot vehicles or accessories – which is ideal for somebody planning a driving holiday who needs temporary access to a roof box or bicycle rack.
Peugeot UK managing director Jon Goodman commented: “It means existing customers can borrow a different mode of transport for a day or two plus it gives us access to potential new customers who want to try one of our vehicles.”
