Cheap Car Hire On the Increase in Europe in 2011
Good news for people hoping to do a spot of driving on their Europe holidays this year – there are more locations offering cheap car hire than there have been for several years.
That is the conclusion of a study carried out on behalf of Holiday Autos, which found that cheap car hire prices have dropped for the first time since 2007.
After examining some 180 holiday destinations in its latest Car Hire Price Index, the broker discovered that the average cost of a week's cheap car hire throughout Europe had dropped by 6 per cent this year, to around £251. The global economic downturn, coupled with natural phenomena such as the 2010 ash attack, actually led to car hire prices increasing between 2008 and 2010, so it is welcome news for bargain-hunting holidaymakers that cheap car hire is back.
Researchers went on to highlight destinations where car hire had become substantially less expensive this year. Ireland holidays were considered particularly good value, with a week's cheap car hire down 51 per cent to £125 compared to the previous year.
Gibraltar holidays were the next cheapest, with a 35 per cent fall to £195, followed by Gerona in northern Spain, where a week's car hire fell by 29 per cent to £228. In south-eastern Spain, a week's cheap car hire cost £217 – down 28 per cent from 2010 – and in Greece it fell by 24 per cent to £261.
The most expensive destinations for car hire were Switzerland, France, Ibiza, Portugal and Sicily, researchers added – although some great bargains can still be found by searching online.
