Cheap Hotels Abound in Europe in 2010
The trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) has revealed that Europe is fast becoming the world's top spot for cheap hotels.
The latest tHPI figures showed that hotel prices in European cities had dropped to an average of £89 a night this month, which is an 8 per cent fall compared to June, where the average figure was £97. In 38 of the 50 cities listed in July’s tHPI there were significant price reductions, particularly in the popular destinations sought after by UK travellers taking holidays to Spain.
The Spanish capital Madrid saw average hotel rates fall to £97 a night – the lowest rate for the year and 21 per cent less than in June. Cheap hotels are also plentiful in the southern region of Andalusia, where Seville and Granada showed their lowest rates so far, with average rates of £60 and £55 respectively.
However, it was not just good news for people booking those cheap flights to Spain – there were significant price reductions for hotels in the normally pricey Scandinavian countries. This month, prices in Oslo dropped by 21 per cent to an average £114 a night, by 9 per cent to £130 in Copenhagen, and by 10 per cent to £140 in Stockholm.
In Eastern Europe, there were major price reductions as well – the cost of an overnight stay in Budapest fell by 16 per cent to an average of £73, by 14 per cent in Prague to £70, and by 12 per cent in the Bulgarian capital Sofia to just £60. One of the few European countries to buck the cheap hotels trend was the UK, where prices had increased by 8 per cent from June to an average of £108 a night.
