Cheap Hotels Still Represent Excellent Value

Cheap Hotels Still Represent Excellent Value The latest Hotel Price Index (HPI) was published this week by Hotels.com, and reveals an interesting level of price fluctuations around the world, many driven by international events.

Although the first half of 2011 saw the price of hotel rooms increase worldwide by an average of 3 per cent, a closer look at individual regions and destinations showed a more varied picture of price rises and falls.

As events in North Africa and the Middle East unfolded, more UK and European tourists returned to the more traditional destinations. These included France and Spain holidays, the report revealed, with a 2 per cent rise in average hotel prices across the Continent.

Spain holidays were particularly popular throughout the year, and this was reflected in the prices of hotels across the country – and especially on the Spanish islands. Although cheap hotels remain plentiful in the Balearics and the Canary Islands, the HPI showed that the increased level of tourists taking cheap flights to Ibiza, for instance, led to some hotels raising prices by 57 per cent.

People taking South Africa holidays this year had many cheap hotels to choose from, as prices fell in the 12 months after the 2010 World Cup.

In summary, the HPI report noted that cheap hotels are still widely available for international travellers, and continue to represent excellent value for money. Room rates have risen overall by just 6 per cent compared to prices in 2004, when the Index was first launched.

Hotels.com president David Roche commented: "It's important to underline the general health of the sector so far this year."

"This can be seen by the growth in the supply of rooms all over the world with nearly 6,000 hotel projects in development. This increase in accommodation also acts as a brake on prices and, once again, is good news for the consumer."
