Europe Holds Hotel Rates Low for 2010
Europe experienced an increase in the amount of cheap hotels last year, for the second year in a row.
A new survey published by the Hogg Robinson Group revealed that room rates in the majority of cities across the world increased slightly in 2010. However, Europe actually enjoyed a boost in the number of cheap hotels available to travellers.
The survey tracked the prices of hotel rooms in 75 cities worldwide. More than half showed that average room rates had increased in the past 12 months, with the largest increases being seen in high-end accommodation. However, many European cities saw hotel room rates fall by up to 11 per cent.
The best places for cheap hotels were Athens, Dublin, Lisbon and Madrid. Holidays to these destinations became cheaper throughout 2010 – with cheap hotel rates just one of a raft of falling prices in Spain and Portugal.
Travel analysts have predicted a strong revival in Spain and Portugal holidays this summer due to great value for money, and cheap flights airlines are already reporting increased bookings.
However, people taking USA holidays this year will be likely to pay a little more for their hotel rooms. The survey found that as the value of the dollar increased in strength, average room rates increased. New York holidays were a good example, with a 9 per cent price drop in 2009 followed by a 4 per cent increase last year.
The region that saw the single largest drop in hotel room rates last year was the Middle East. Holidays to this region became better value than ever, due to its economic troubles, which saw hotel rates in places such as Abu Dhabi drop by a quarter.
