Europe Hotels Report Increase in Guest Numbers
New figures issued this week have revealed that the European hotel sector is well on the way to recovering from the global economic downturn, as increasing numbers of people book cheap hotels on their Europe holidays.
Hotel market analysts MKG Hospitality said that all the forecasts for the year predict continuing growth, with the biggest improvements to be seen in popular European capitals such as Paris and Amsterdam. Holidays to these cities are always popular and their hotel sectors can expect to do well this year, said MKG's director of development Vanguelis Panayotis.
"Most countries now find themselves at the beginning of a new hotel cycle, with positive demand growth," he added.
"Economic recovery in Europe is in line with forecasts, thanks in large (sic) to the second half of the year. This was led by increasing domestic demand, as well as an export-driven industrial rebound in line with global growth and trade, particularly from emerging markets. More importantly, growth became sustainable."
Mr Panayotis cited figures compiled by his company's market monitor database HotelCompSet. These showed that revenue by hotel room occupancy (RevPAR) improved steadily over 2010, and by the end of the year, the number of people staying in cheap hotels on their Europe holidays had returned to "almost pre-crisis levels".
The UK had one of the best recoveries, with a 10.4 per cent growth in RevPAR in the past year. This was followed by the Netherlands, at 9 per cent, and Germany, at 8 per cent. France and Spain holidays also remained popular, with RevPAR increases of over 6 per cent.
