Europe and Latin America Airports Urge More Choice
Airport bosses in both Europe and Latin America have called for a more flexible market between the two continents.
At the opening sessions of the first ever EU-Latin America Aviation Summit, held in the Brazilian coastal city of Rio de Janeiro, airport representatives agreed that more open aviation markets would prove beneficial to customers and the industry alike.
They said that the move would lead to greater choice and competition, and ultimately to more cheap flights to Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and other Latin American countries than ever before.
A strong argument for more open markets was made by both the European airport trade organisation ACI Europe and the regional counterpart ACI LAC (Latin America & Caribbean). The groups expressed their fervent hope that the inaugural industry summit would be the start of swift negotiations between the EU and the nations of Latin America.
Representatives noted that in the past decade there has already been a 40 per cent increase in the capacity for air services between the two regions. Business ties have strengthened and more people are choosing Latin American or Caribbean holidays, thanks to growth in the number of cheap flights or special deals available.
There was a great emphasis placed on the potential for future growth, but in order for growth to flourish, a more open and liberalised regime of agreements between European and Latin American airports is necessary.
ACI Europe director general Olivier Jankovec said: “Experience gained with North America and also with neighbouring countries like Morocco, shows that consumers are the biggest winners from aviation liberalisation and that there are other far-reaching benefits.”
