Foreign Tourists to Drive Portugal Holidays Revival
A new report has suggested that Portugal holidays are to enjoy something of a mass revival this summer – largely from the UK, Irish, German and Brazilian tourist markets.
The study, carried out by the Portuguese national Institute for Tourism Development and Planning (IPDT) and released this week, said that the country's economy is well placed to benefit from a late rise in the number of overseas holidaymakers, more than compensating for a drop off in the number of Portuguese opting for a "staycation" this summer in their own country.
There are many cheap flights to Lisbon and Faro, plus other destinations such as the island of Madeira available from the UK and Ireland.
The Algarve in particular is consistently popular among British visitors seeking out Portugal holidays to indulge their love of golfing. Custom-made resort towns such as Vilamoura cater almost exclusively to the golfing set. Only this week the Portuguese tourism minister Bernardo Trindade said that he believed golf holidays and luxury holiday resorts were key to the country's economic recovery.
Lisbon holidays are well suited for fans of fascinating city breaks, thanks to the capital's rich history, culture, cuisine and architecture, while sun seekers will be able to relax and enjoy a tranquil beach holiday by taking one of the cheap flights to Madeira available from British and Irish airports.
Commenting on the IPDT report, the institute's president Antonio Jorge Costa told the Portugal News that most key figures in his country's tourism industry believe that "the sector's evolution will be sustained, above all, by the external market".
