Global Hotel Room Rates Fall for 2010
New research has revealed that UK travellers can find more cheap hotels around the world than they could six years ago.
A study by Hotels.com's Hotels Price Index found that by the second quarter of 2010, the average cost of a hotel room was 1 per cent lower than when figures began to be collated in 2004. The report noted: "This is a mark of just how far prices fell during the downturn."
The largest falls in hotel prices were experienced by people taking Abu Dhabi holidays over the past few years. Partly due to the economic downturn affecting the United Arab Emirates, cheap hotels became commonplace, with average room rates falling by 35 per cent to around £113 a night.
By contrast, the largest increases in hotel prices were found among people taking South Africa holidays to see the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Host city Cape Town experienced the largest single price rises, with a 54 per cent increase – taking average room rates from £82 to £127 per night.
For UK travellers taking Geneva holidays, the Swiss city was the most expensive hotels destination, with a 5 per cent increase in room rates to an average of £155. Another well-heeled part of Europe, Monte Carlo, was the second most expensive destination, with room rates averaging £152 after a 2 per cent price increase.
Hotels.com president David Roche concluded: "Hotel pricing trends, up to the end of the second quarter of 2010, confirm that stabilisation has indeed been under way in the hotel industry, and that there are hints of a recovery. Hotel prices appear to have hit the bottom in the first half of 2010, and have lately trended up 2 per cent against the prior year, the first time prices have risen since 2007."
