Hotels in Dubai Hit by Sliding Visitors
In the current economic climate more people seem to be opting not to take their holidays in Dubai, as their hotels are experiencing dwindling visitors.
An incredibly large amount of construction work and money has gone into making Dubai one of the most luxurious holiday destinations in the world; Dubai hotels are amongst the most extravagant found anywhere.
However recently many of these hotels have suffered a downturn in occupancy, with thoughts that the economic crisis we are currently experiencing playing a part in this.
Alex Kyriakidis, managing partner for tourism and hospitality in the Middle East for Deloitte said: “Dubai has suffered a double whammy. People are not travelling because they are concerned about their jobs and, at the same time, the pound has crashed against the dirham.”
Figures from Deloitte show that Dubai hotels suffered a decline in occupancy of 16 per cent in the last year leading up to April. With a 34.5 per cent decrease in revenue per available hotel room(RevPAR), finding a cheap hotel should be easier, as many places have been forced to slash prices.
The business hotel sector has been hit the hardest, with city hotels experiencing drops in occupancy of almost 50 per cent.
It’s not all doom and gloom though, as Dubai is determined to claw back its reputation as one of the premier holiday resorts in the world. The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce will be launching a summer campaign in league with the likes of Virgin Holidays and Gold Medal to bring back visitors.
