Hotels.com Offer Advice for Perfect Hotel Guests
Cheap hotels website Hotels.com has published a list of top tips for guests at hotels around the world.
The site said that it always pays to be considerate while at any hotel, from the lowliest two or three-star cheap hotels to a lavish five-star retreat. Staff and fellow guests alike will appreciate the gesture and it makes for an all-round more pleasant stay.
The number one tip from Hotels.com is – appropriately enough – all about tips. The tipping culture varies greatly from country to country, and even from region to region.
The website recommends spending a few minutes on the internet researching your destination’s attitude towards tipping to avoid awkward confrontations: For instance, while tipping is not the norm in Spain, and is not expected in France, you will be considered rude and tight-fisted if you fail to tip waiters and door staff on trips to the Middle East and Africa and during USA holidays.
There is also the fact that, in poorer countries, staff rely on the tips to top up their wages. Hotels.com recommends keeping small bills and coinage readily to hand, to avoid the embarrassment of having nothing but large denomination notes. As it points out “you can’t ask for change!”
The second golden rule is to feel free to complain – but politely and tactfully. Hotels.com also recommends that guests adopt a considerate attitude to both the environment and staff workloads with a “green” approach to replacing towels and bed linen. All electrical appliances such as air conditioning and TVs should also be switched off when leaving the room.
One important piece of advice is to “keep the noise down” – and many weary travellers will agree that a loud neighbour can be a nightmare when trying to sleep, or even relax after a day’s sightseeing.
Any partying should quieten right down after 10pm. This is even more important in cheap hotels, where walls tend to be thinner and the rooms smaller.
