India Scoops Asia Travel Award for Best Destination
Tourism bosses will be hoping for a boost to the India holidays market this week following the country's recent success at the Asia 2010 World Travel Awards.
At a glitzy awards ceremony in Delhi on Thursday night, India was named the region's top destination. This was due to its huge diversity, fascinating history and culture and the growing reputation for sporting events, mainly due to the success of the recent Commonwealth Games.
The award for the best hotel in the region was also won by India. Holidays at the Trident Gurgaon in New Delhi were considered by judges to be truly special, thanks to the hotel's luxurious facilities and beautiful setting.
World Travel Awards founder and president Graham E Cooke told the audience: "The level of competition here in Asia is exceptional and it is no wonder that the region is leading the world out of recession. As the Commonwealth Games draws to a climax, millions around the world have not merely enjoyed world-class action on the athletics track, they have witnessed India coming of age, with Delhi proving its credentials as a world-class sport tourism hub".
Thailand holidays also achieved recognition at the awards ceremony, with the country's Six Senses Hideaway in Samui scooping the prize for the best honeymoon resort in the region.
The awards for the region's best airline and top business class carrier went to Malaysia Airlines, which offers customers cheap flights to India and across Asia, while the gong for the best first class airline in the region was picked up by Korean Air. The leading Asian airport award went to Singapore's Changi hub, while the Indian Maharaja picked up the gong for Asia's leading luxury train service and Costa Cruises won the award for its leading cruise line.
