Luton Airport Boasts Rise in Passenger Numbers

Luton Airport Boasts Rise in Passenger Numbers UK travellers seeking cheap flights to the sun helped swell the numbers of passengers passing through London Luton Airport last month to over a million, according to official figures from the hub.

Publishing its July 2011 statistics, Luton revealed that 948,218 people took scheduled cheap flights that month and another 72,172 travelled on charter flights. This is a 9 per cent increase compared to the same month in 2010, it noted.

The most popular routes were those offering cheap flights to Majorca, although cheap flights to Malaga also experienced high passenger numbers, and Budapest flights were also very heavily booked up.

London Luton has been investing for growth for some time now, assisted by cheap fares carriers such as easyJet – which considers the airport its home base – and Monarch Airlines. Recently it released half-yearly results, which showed that in the first six months of 2011 passenger numbers increased by 11.3 per cent.

Commenting on today's figures and the reasons for the growth, London Luton Airport managing director Glyn Jones said: "More business and holiday travellers have come through London's fastest-growing major airport due to the competitive airline partnerships we have attracted."

"We are now focused on further improving our infrastructure to ensure higher quality of service for our higher volumes of passengers."

last month Monarch announced plans for a new route from another London hub – Gatwick Airport. The cheap flights to Barcelona will begin in October and will leave the airport daily from the 21st of that month.

Managing director Kevin George commented: "Barcelona is one of the UK's most popular short break destinations and we are delighted to be adding this to our route network from Gatwick in addition to our existing flights from Manchester."
