Mexico Holidays Prove Popular in Summer 2011
Mexico holidays are increasingly popular among British travellers this year, according to the latest report from Post Office Travel Money.
The Post Office said that the currency experiencing the fastest-growing demand this summer has been the Mexican peso. With an incredible 144 per cent jump in orders from UK holidaymakers keen to take advantage of the increased number of cheap flights to Mexico being offered by carriers such as British Airways.
Its report said that BA's new cheap flights to Cancun from London Gatwick Airport are a key factor in the refreshed interest in Mexico holidays.
Long-haul holidays appear to be back with a vengeance this summer, with the Post Office logging currency demands for Australia, Barbados and Thailand holidays. Out of its top ten list, the only short-haul destinations that made it were Croatia, Iceland and Switzerland. Croatia holidays remain highly popular, however, with the Croatian kuna being the only currency to retain increasing demand from the Post Office since 2008.
Argentian holidays have also done well this year, being deemed a "surprise success" by the head of Post Office Travel Money, Sarah Munro.
"Once again the big winners in the drive to attract UK holidaymakers were destinations further afield," she said. "Encouragingly, the best growth levels were recorded in August, which could be a positive indicator of what lies ahead as the winter sun season gets underway."
Cheap flights to Mexico and other long-haul destinations are widely available online, from a host of providers. As well as BA's Gatwick-Cancun service, Air France and Thomas Cook Airlines are among carriers operating routes to the sunshine resort.
