Middle East Holidays Celebrated at Awards Bash

Middle East Holidays Celebrated at Awards Bash With the popularity of Middle East holidays on the increase, last night's celebration of the best providers in the region could not have been more timely.

The World Travel Awards 2011 Middle East Ceremony took place in the glitzy surroundings of the Armani Hotel in Dubai. Holidays to this destination have been one of the greatest success stories of the past few years, so the setting itself was highly appropriate.

Lebanese pop star Elissa kicked off the proceedings, which were attended by the great and good of the Middle East holidays industry, plus local tourism chiefs and government ministers.

With over 462 different travel and tourism organisations in the running for the 125 different categories represented in the awards, competition was hot – but in the end some of the most well-known bands triumphed.

Etihad Airways has become well known in the UK for its cheap flights to Dubai and other destinations across the Middle East. Last night it walked away with four different awards – the "Middle East's Leading Airline", the "Middle East's Leading Airline First Class", the "Middle East's Leading Airline In-flight Entertainment," plus "Middle East's Leading Cabin Staff."

Dubai holidays themselves did very well at the ceremony, with the emirate winning the "Middle East's Leading Destination" award, and the gong for the "Middle East's Leading Meetings and Conference Destination."

Neighbouring emirate Abu Dhabi also had much to celebrate, winning the "Middle East's Leading Tourist Board" and "Middle East's Responsible Tourism" awards.

Commenting on the ceremony, World Travel Awards founder Graham Cooke said: "The Middle East was the perfect region to mark the start of the World Travel Awards 2011 Grand Tour, setting the bar for the rest of the world to raise the standards of excellence in travel and tourism."
