Monte Carlo Tops Hotels Price League
Anybody looking for cheap hotels before booking their holidays should steer well clear of Monte Carlo, according to a new pricing guide.
The Hotels.com website has revealed that a punter at one of Monaco’s many casinos would need to have a very lucky night in order to stay at one of its hotels – with the city-state’s accommodation proving to be the most expensive in the world.
The average prices for rooms in Monte Carlo hotels were a hefty £172 a night in 2009, according to a survey carried out by the site. Somewhat surprisingly, perhaps, the next most expensive place for hotels was Moscow – rooms in the Russian capital were down 27 per cent compared to 2008, but last year they were still costing visitors an average of £169 per night.
Third place went to Abu Dhabi, with the cost of a hotel room in 2009 averaging £159 a night, followed by New York, at £149 a night and Geneva, at £144 a night. The lesson appears to be that New York holidays still represent great value in terms of food, drink and shopping, but require some smart detective work to find cheap hotels and other forms of accommodation.
The survey also managed to unearth good news about cheap hotels abroad, however. The best destination for these was the Latvian capital Riga, which last year saw hotel prices drop 8 per cent to an average of £55 a night. And Florida holidays were also cheaper, with a hotel room in Orlando costing around £57 a night.
The Estonian city of Tallinn offered rooms for around £59 a night and Las Vegas holidays were also good value, at £60 a night for a room, In Kuala Lumpur, a visitor could expect to pay some £65 a night.
