New Ash Cloud Causes Grounding of Scottish Flights
Thousands of families and travellers who have booked cheap flights to Europe and beyond for the half-term period will be anxiously awaiting developments concerning the latest volcanic eruption from Iceland.
Airlines – particularly cheap fares carriers such as Ryanair and easyJet – will also be nervous scanning the weather and news reports after last April's ash attack caused the cancellation of hundreds of cheap flights, the ruination of thousands of cheap holidays and triggered millions of pounds worth of compensation payments and lost profits for the travel industry.
Now the cancellation today of dozens of cheap flights to and from Scotland this morning due to the ash cloud caused by the eruption of the Grimsvotn volcano has already left thousands of passengers stranded and placed an ashy question mark over the holiday plans of tens of thousands more across the UK.
British Airways and KLM were among the first to cancel their Scottish services this morning, followed by Eastern Airways and cheap flights carriers easyJet, Flybe and Ryanair – which complained bitterly about having to pull flights under advisement from the Irish Aviation Authority.
Bmi said that its own cheap flights to Aberdeen were subject to delay, although its services to Glasgow and Edinburgh were running as normal. Glasgow-based Loganair cancelled three dozen flights, although its inter-island routes in Orkney remained on schedule.
Iceland's President Olafur Grimsson said today that although the latest eruption was of significant size, it was unlikely to have nearly as much of an effect on flights as last year's eruption.
With the ash cloud expected to reach other parts of Britain over the next few days, the prospect of flight cancellations for other routes remains a possibility, although the Met Office insisted that variable wind patterns made it hard to predict what will happen. Holidaymakers will most likely be checking regularly for updates.
