Online Best for Car Hire Insurance Deals
Researchers have accused many car hire firms of letting down customers over the issue of good value auto insurance.
A study by moneymaxim.co.uk found that although there are plenty of cheap car hire companies when it comes to rental rates, the car hire insurance offered by these companies was one of the most pricey forms of insurance on the market.
Daily car hire insurance from a standard company came to around £10 a day – the annual equivalent of £3,650. This was despite the fact that the coverage only applied to damage or theft worth around £1,500, or less.
Some deals were even worse, said moneymaxim managing director Mark Bower: “One example we found was a case from European car hire giant Sixt,” he said.
“The cost of extending collision damage and theft waivers to reduce the excess payable to €500 in the case of an incident was an incredible £123.28 for a week’s hire. That is equivalent to an annual premium of £6,410 for a policy with a maximum benefit of €1,500!”
Fortunately better car hire insurance can be found online, with prices starting at just £13.30 for an entire week’s cover – or £40 for the entire year, researchers pointed out. Furthermore, such policies offer a greater level of protection, covering such problems as broken wing mirrors, chipped windscreens and damaged tyres.
In January, consumer magazine Which? discussed some of the hidden expenses associated with car hire overseas. For cars hired on Europe holidays, insurance usually did not cover the first £1,000 of a claim for theft or damage.
