Qantas Shows Support for Socceroos at Bondi Beach

Qantas Shows Support for Socceroos at Bondi Beach Australian flag carrier Qantas organised a spectacular event on Sydney’s Bondi Beach this weekend to demonstrate its support for the Aussie World Cup Squad.

The airline, which offers cheap flights to Australia from London Heathrow Airport, unfurled a huge “scarf of support” for the Socceroos on the beach, festooned with messages of encouragement collected from its website. Each note of support added 10 centimetres to the scarf and so far Qantas has received 8,000, making the item some 800 metres long – almost the whole length of Bondi Beach itself.

The scarf was unfurled by hundreds of Aussie football fans, who were joined by former national player Steve Corica.

He told reporters: “… it’s great to see the Australian fans come out and support the boys today and it’s fantastic to see the messages of support continue to pour in for the team. The team will see the coverage in South Africa and will get an extra boost for their match against Ghana.”

Sadly the boost proved insufficient for Saturday’s Ghana match, with Australia only managing a one-all draw. This was considerably better than the Socceroos’ 4-0 loss to Germany in their first game though.

Australia is currently putting all of its sporting diplomacy into its bid to host the 2022 World Cup, with FIFA’s final decision on the locations for both the 2018 and 2022 tournaments to be made this December.

In the meantime, there is plenty to attract visitors considering Australia holidays, with or without the excitement of the World Cup. The country offers an amazing variety of scenery and wildlife, culture and cuisine in the cities of Perth, Sydney and Melbourne, plus the wonder of the world that is Uluru – formerly named Ayers Rock.
