Ryanair Reaffirms Claim to be the Favourite of the World
Never one to be shy of blowing its own trumpet, cheap flights carrier Ryanair declared once again today that it is "the world's favourite airline", after figures published by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) showed that it carried more international passengers last year than any of its rivals.
According to the IATA statistics, the Irish budget airline carried some 71.2 million international passengers in 2010 on cheap flights to Europe. This was some 62 million more than Ireland's flag carrier Aer Lingus and nearly 30 million more than German flag carrier Lufthansa, which came in at second place.
Ryanair was particularly pleased with itself after the figures revealed that arch-rival cheap fares carrier easyJet only carried 37 million passengers last year and British Airways managed 26 million.
Ryanair head of communications Stephen McNamara commented: "IATA has once again confirmed Ryanair is the world's favourite airline, with more international scheduled passengers than any other carrier. Even the combined traffic of easyJet and BA is still almost 10 million passengers fewer than Ryanair, proving that passengers can't get enough of Ryanair's guaranteed lowest fares and no fuel surcharges."
Mr McNamara added that Ryanair was celebrating being "the world's favourite airline" by making a million seats available for sale at just €9.99 until midnight tomorrow, for travel across more than 1,000 European routes in September this year.
Ryanair managed yet another dig at easyJet last week. It asserted that its rival's own statistics showed that it "can't match Ryanair's punctuality", which is why the figures had been "hidden" in quarterly investors' reports.
