Spain Aviation Strike Threat Lifted for Summer 2011
Spain holidays are set for a surge this summer after the news that the threat of potential walkouts by Spanish aviation workers has been lifted after a preliminary deal was made between airport operators and unions.
The unions representing airport workers across Spain had raised the prospect of 22 days of strikes at the height of the tourist season in protest at part-privatisation plans. Airlines and holiday operators have been watching the situation nervously, as have the thousands of UK travellers who have booked cheap flights to Spain over the next few months.
Luckily an early deal which guarantees jobs and working conditions has caused the strike threat to be withdrawn, much to the relief of the holidays sector.
Cheap fares carrier Jet2.com managing director Ian Doubtfire commented: "The news that the strikes have been called off is great for holidaymakers as British people love to holiday in Spain and its islands. The strikes threatened the busy Easter period and key dates across the summer – so people can now look forward to their breaks to Spain without fear of disruption."
Mr Doubtfire added that the late Easter holidays this year are a perfect opportunity for Britons to enjoy a couple of weeks "in one of the Spanish cities or resorts enjoying average temperatures of 25 degrees". He pointed out that "there are still seats available but if people want to travel to Spain they should book now as this news will undoubtedly cause a rush of bookings".
There are a huge range of cheap flights to Spain from the UK, with Jet2.com offering cheap flights to Alicante, Malaga, Ibiza, Majorca and Menorca from eight airports across the Midlands and the North.
