Spain Holidays Best Value for Autumn Half-Term 2011
Spain holidays remain the most affordable breaks for British families taking advantage of half-term next week, a report has revealed this week.
The Post Office Travel Money report said that cheap holidays on the Costa del Sol give UK families more bang for their buck, although the value of the pound against the euro has not significantly improved since last year. During this time, sterling has improved by 27 per cent against the Turkish lira and by 21 per cent against the Kenyan shilling, it noted.
Once other factors such as inflation are taken into account, Turkey holidays are 12 per cent cheaper than they were in October 2010 and Kenya holidays are 7 per cent cheaper. There have also been falls in the cost of holiday essentials such as food and accommodation in Dubai, Egypt’s Sharm el Sheikh resort and Malta, Post Office Travel Money said.
Despite this, the sheer ease of travel to Spain – with cheap flights to Malaga, Marbella and many other sunshine destinations available throughout the UK – and the low cost of the fares compared to longer-haul destinations, plus the wide array of cheap hotels and hostels on offer still makes Spain holidays the best bet this half-term, Post Office Travel Money head Sarah Munro said.
“Price is bound to be a big consideration, so it is good to report falling prices in five of the destinations that attract UK families,” she added.
Ms Munro was referring to the fact that Thailand holidays have also fallen in value. The island of Phuket was rated second cheapest, followed by Sharm el Sheikh, the Florida theme park centre of Orlando, and Paphos in Cyprus.
