Summer 2012 Holiday Bookings Off to Flying Start

Summer 2012 Holiday Bookings Off to Flying Start Figures published recently by travel industry analyst GfK Ascent have revealed a strong start when it came to bookings for cheap holidays overseas next summer.

The data collected by GfK found that there have been nearly 20,000 more package holidays sold for summer 2012 compared to the previous year. Although Europe holidays remain strong, the number of people booking Tunisia and Egypt holidays next summer has dipped sharply, researchers said, with the outlook for Middle East holidays in general much cooler than it has been this year.

Overall, there was a drop of 3,000 bookings for Egypt holidays and a fall of 1,700 package Tunisia holidays. Sales of package Turkey holidays are also down year-on-year despite the country's status as a holiday high-flier over the past decade.

On the positive side, bookings for USA holidays were up by 16 per cent for next summer, GfK said. Searches for cheap flights to New York and package holidays in NYC were the single most sought after, although Florida holidays and trips to Las Vegas remain popular too.

The figures used in the study represent holiday bookings for summer 2012 made by 21 May this year. At the start of last month, major tour operators - such as Thomson and First Choice and Thomas Cook – all launched their Summer 2012 brochures.

New figures also published this week by Experian Hitwise have confirmed previous reports of a Renaissance for Spain and Greece holidays. Published in the UK Travel Quarterly Review, the figures showed that both countries enjoy six of the fastest-booked destinations, thanks to low prices and a wide choice of cheap flights from the UK.
