Turkey Holidays Triumph at WTA 2011
Turkey holidays have been surging ahead in the popularity stakes for many years now, thanks to the country's convenient medium-haul location, its warm climate, cheap hotels and fascinating history and culture – plus the Turkish tourism industry's strenuous efforts to place it on the map.
Cheap flights to Turkey's historical city of Istanbul, its resorts at Antalya and Bodrum and the capital Ankara have mushroomed over the past decade, as budget airlines and flag carriers alike have raced to snap up the growing market for Turkey holidays.
Last Friday saw these efforts well rewarded when Turkey holidays were honoured at the 2011 World Travel Awards European stop-off. The awards ceremony itself took place at the resort of Antalya, which saw its Concorde De Luxe residence scoop the gong for the best all-inclusive resort in the whole of Europe.
The opulent Antalya Mardan Palace won the award for best luxury hotel in Europe, while the south-west coastal destination of Oludeniz won the award for Europe's best beach destination and Istanbul triumphed in the city break section.
World Travel Awards founder and president Graham E Cooke declared that Turkey holidays were soaring in popularity because the country was proudly displaying its status as a "world-class tourism brand". Mr Cooke said: "Antalya in particular represents brand Turkey at its finest. Its winning mix of heritage, sun-kissed beaches, state-of-the-art facilities and superb value has propelled it into the league of one of the world's great destination cities."
There were plenty of other countries whose holiday forms did well at the 2011 World Travel Awards. German flag carrier Lufthansa won the leading airline award, while London scooped the prize for leading destination and the best overall hotel award went to the Hotel Le Bristol in Paris.
