UK Travellers Look for Cheap Hotels in Eurozone
Savvy UK travellers are tracking down great deals on cheap hotels in those European countries most affected by the eurozone crisis, according to new research.
Analysis of online search data by Hotels.com found that Britons were looking most closely for cheap hotels in Greece, Italy, Ireland, Portugal and Spain. Holidays to the last two countries have remained very popular even since the credit crunch occurred back in 2008.
Hotels.com said that searches for cheap hotels and holiday deals in these five countries had “increased dramatically” between the start of June and the end of September this year, with the biggest beneficiaries being Spain and Portugal. During this period, holiday searches for these two countries had shot up by 85 per cent and 80 per cent respectively.
“Hoteliers in some of the affected countries have cut their room rates to attract visitors because demand has slumped as domestic consumers tighten their belts,” said Hotels.com spokeswoman Alison Couper. “It could well be that savvy UK travellers are shopping around and targeting those destinations affected by the euro crisis in the hope of bagging a bargain,” she said.
The most recent Hotel Price Index published by Hotels.com detailed the average room rates paid by holidaymakers in the first six months of 2011. Amongst other things, the results showed an increase in cheap hotels for people taking Greece holidays – average rates dropped by 15 per cent to £80, although hotel rates in Italy and Spain increased by 5 per cent and 3 per cent to £113 and £83 respectively.
