UK Travellers Prefer Cheap Car Hire to Public Transport
New research has revealed this week that Britons would prefer the independence of cheap car hire over public transport when on holiday overseas.
In a poll carried out by carhiremarket.com, over half of all the UK travellers questioned said that they would seek out cheap car hire before their holiday or upon arrival. Reasons given for this included reluctance to use public transport due to the language barrier, safety, convenience and comfort.
In all, some 58 per cent of respondents told researchers that they would always opt for cheap car hire during their overseas breaks.
Carhiremarket.com product manager Andrew Shorrock said: “Even though most public transport systems abroad are very safe and easy to use, this survey shows many of us have concerns about using them, due to confusing systems and not speaking the local language. Hiring a car abroad can be extremely advantageous in terms of comfort and not being tied to public transport time restrictions.”
Other interesting findings in the poll included the revelation that older travellers appeared to be more seasoned when it came to using public transport, approaching the transport systems of other countries with far less trepidation than their younger counterparts. Researchers found that just 12 per cent of over-55s felt concerned about safety when using foreign public transport methods, while a far larger 22 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds felt this way.
This greater confidence among older travellers also extended to fears over getting lost while travelling. Only 16 per cent of over-55s expressed worries about becoming lost while travelling overseas, compared to 27 per cent of 18 to 24-year-old travellers.
