Virgin to Offer More Cheap Flights to the Caribbean
Defying recent increases in Air Passenger Duty (APD), long-haul cheap flights carrier Virgin Atlantic announced this week that it will be stepping up its services to the Caribbean.
Virgin already offers a wide range of cheap flights to the Caribbean, but APD increases have hit these routes harder than other destinations, and many airlines have responded by cutting back on the services that they offer. Sir Richard Branson's carrier, however, insisted that it wished to demonstrate its strong commitment to the popular holiday region by taking the opposite course.
Addressing a London conference organised by the Caribbean Tourism Organisation, Virgin Atlantic's director of commercial and revenue planning Edmund Rose stressed that the region was "tremendously important" to his airline.
"We are proud of the business and revenue that is brought to the Caribbean through our presence and we are committed to extending that," he declared.
Mr Rose went on to reveal that Virgin Atlantic will be offering extra cheap flights to Barbados, Cuba, Grenada and Tobago from London Gatwick and Manchester airports as part of this strategy, plus more premium economy seats on flights aimed at travellers making their way to their Caribbean holidays.
Virgin Atlantic operates a large network of cheap flights to long-haul destinations. As well as its Caribbean routes, it also offers services to the USA, South Africa and Australia, plus cities in the Asia-Pacific region.
Sir Richard also recently opened his first Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship in Jamaica, at a cost of £2.2 million. The centre intends to boost the Caribbean economy and tourism industry by mentoring and encouraging young business owners.
