World Cup Gives South African Hoteliers High Scores

World Cup Gives South African Hoteliers High Scores Hotel market analysts STR Global have revealed who came out on top in the 2010 World Cup this year when it came to catering for the hordes of soccer fans taking South Africa holidays to coincide with the tournament.

The good news for football fans booking cheap flights to South Africa for the tournament was that there was plenty of capacity. Cheap hotels were plentiful and the government and tourist industry collaborated closely to ensure that South Africa holidays would be the best value possible during the World Cup.

Spain may have been crowned the undisputed champions of the World Cup, but STR said that hoteliers in all of South Africa’s host cities experienced "mixed performance" during June and July.

When it comes to the South African hotel industry, STR examined the daily performance of over 50 hotels in Cape Town, Durban, Gauteng Province and Sandton. Cheap hotels in Sandton enjoyed the highest rates of occupancy during the tournament of 84 per cent - a 22 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2009. On match days themselves, occupancy rates shot up to 90 per cent.

In Cape Town, occupancy rates were lower, at around 67 per cent and just 79 per cent on match days.

The difference between match and non-match days was even greater in Durban, which hosted seven games during the tournament. On the match days themselves, occupancy was at 82 per cent, but overall rates only reached 61 per cent.

Despite these differences, STR concluded that the World Cup had been of great benefit to the South African holidays industry.

"The legacy of the World Cup should continue to provide an opportunity for South African hoteliers," said STR Global managing director Elizabeth Randall. "The nation's warmth and hospitality was experienced by international spectators in the stadia and projected on television screens worldwide," she added proudly.
